Thursday Thirteen #32
Do you have books that you love so much that you have read them several times? I certainly do. One might go so far as to call some of my favorites my “default books.” Sometimes when I am in need of something good to read, and I can’t find anything new that strikes my fancy, I’ll just default to one of my favorites. There are some books out there that I have read more than fifty times over the years. I suppose that it’s like having your favorite meal at a particular restaurant. You always know it’s going to be good.
Anyway, here is a list of thirteen books that I have read more than once. Do you agree with any of my choices? Do you have any of your own favorite multiple reads to suggest?
These are a few of my favorite books…
1. The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley – Its prequel won a Newbery Award, but I like this one better.
2. Aunt Dimity’s Death by Nancy Atherton – This one is also quite good as an audiobook. It comes complete with a recipe.
3. The Black Dudley Murder by Margery Allingham – Also known as The Crime at Black Dudley, this is the first Albert Campion book. Wnjoy the process of Campion taking over the story against the author’s will.
4. Escape to Witch Mountain by Alexander Key – If you’ve only seen the film, you should rally read the book. Love it.
5. The Cater Street Hangman by Anne Perry – The first Charlotte and Thomas mystery. A mystery with a bit of romance thrown in.
6. Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters – This is also book one of a mystery series. I think I’ve read it about one hundred times by now. It doesn’t hurt that the author is an Egyptologist complete with a Ph.D. This series is both fun and informative.
7. Sabriel by Garth Nix – A dark fantasy with two sequels. I doubt that they could ever make a film of this one, much less one that I like.
8. Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper – This is actually the first book of the Dark is Rising series. The story has become a wee bit dated by now, but I don’t care.
9. The Moon Singer by Clyde Robert Bulla – This book may be a wee bit difficult to find. My library has no copies, either. But the story, and the pictures, had a profound effect upon me when I was a child. Sometimes a book just speaks to you, I suppose.
10. The Girl With the Silver Eyes by Willo Davis Roberts – This is one of those books for kids who feel different. It’s about a nine year-old girl with psychic gifts. It was also one of my absolute favorites in Elementary school.
11. Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce – Really, anything by Tamora (pronounced “Tamara”) Pierce is excellent. This just happens to be the one I’ve read the most. She writes the best fantasy.
12. The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot – This is the book that inspired the film. The audiobook is also excellent. It’s read by Anne Hathaway.
13. The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King – The first in a series of mysteries that includes Sherlock Holmes and a brilliant young lady named Mary Russell. If only the BBC would film these! (Mind you, the author is a Californian.)

Oh, just to name a few and in no particular order–
Accidental Tourist – Anne Tyler
Shipping News – Annie Proulx
Gate to Women’s Country – Sheri Tepper
Clan of Cave Bear – Jean Auel
Never cry wolf – Farley Mowat
Time and again – Jack Finney
Great list for TT!!! I am asking you a favor, hope you can vote for me…. I was nominated for pinoyworld blog of the week, voting poll located at my sidebar… Thanks a lot! Happy TT!
No. 10 has my attention on this wonderful list. Thanks for this!
Ooohh.. I must read The Girl with Silver Eyes. I was one of those “different” kids. Still am, really.

We have three books in common: Escape to Witch Mountain, Crocodile on the Sandbank and Beekeeper’s Apprentice.
Other favorites of mine:
The Hobbit
A Christmas Carol
Moby Dick
The Marble Faun
The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted
Hey, 5,6, & 13 are three of my favorite series. Have you tried the Monk series by Anne Perry, that’s another favorite of mine. Have a great weekend. (No TT this week, I had car trouble).
Susan, Time and Again is well named, then, yes?
Thanks for stopping by, prettylifeonline.
Sandy & Heather, give the book a try. It isn’t that long.
Yasmin, I’ve read the Harry Potter Books several times, too.
I love Alexander Key, don’t you Sarah?
Hi Ann. I hope that the car trouble wasn’t too terrible. I tried reading the first Monk book, but it just didn’t grab me. Perhaps it was my frame of mind at the time.
Yeah, I agree about Tamora Pierce. She does great stuff, for all ages, not just YA.
I love the Aunt Dimity series, too. I’ve only read a few and not even the first (yet), but I’m into them. Nice, quick, light, easy reads that still make you think.
And yes, it’s normal to have all that Weird Al stuff. The Tour Manager would if he had the guts!
Gosh, I’m excited because I’ve read a few of these!
Let’s see – I love Susan Cooper and the Beekeeper’s apprentice is lovely. I read Beekeeper’s Apprentice right around the time we got our first hive. Cator street hangman – of course, I do love Anne Perry.
I think I’ve read a few of these but I’m not sure. Thanks for putting together a great story!
sorry I meant – thanks for putting together such great stories….
I do love Robin McKinley; how about her books Beauty, and Rose Daughter?
Other very favorite authors: Jane Austen, Ralph Moody, Marguerite Henry, Marguerite DeAngeli, Lloyd Alexander, and Carol Ryrie Brink.
Great Thursday 13.
I loved Girl With The Silver Eyes when I was a kid. Still have my copy. I read “The Mummy Market” by Nancy Burns Brelis at the same time and loved it, but lost track of my copy of that one:(
Anything by Lois McMaster Bujold is on my top reread list. Particularly: Memory and A Civil Campaign
Susan, Al does the most engaging concerts.
My Mum is the one that started me on Aunt Dimity. I read 3 in the first weekend. Egad.
Hi Claudia! Do you have any favorite repeat reads?
Joyce, isn’t is great how McKinley can do two completely different (and fabulous) versions of Beauty and the Beast? I totally agree with you on Lloyd Alexander. Also…your blog ate my comments. *pout*
OSG, yay! Another person who read Girl with the Silver Eyes. I really wanted Silver Eyes for years afterward. My Mum loves Bujold.
My blog is being a very bad blog indeed! Dear Storyteller, one of my frequent commenters, is also unable to leave comments at this point. I must have my son (who works at Microsoft) help me with this problem. I updated to the most recent version of WordPress, which is the most I know how to do.
I came back today to let you know that I LOVED Aunt Dimity’s Death. I stayed in bed this morning, cup of coffee in hand, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can definitely see reading it again.
Thanks again for the recommendations! I think I’ll read Crocodile on the Sandbank next.
I’m sorry to hear about your blog, Joyce. But I’m glad you liked the book.
[...] am doing more reading. I am working my way through a list of favorite books posted by Celtic Librarian. I just finished Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters. It was such an enjoyable read! [...]
