Are you looking for something fun for the family to do as we come to the end of the summer? There are lots of fun family friendly activities in the Bay Area including many that are free! Check out some ideas below:
If you haven’t tried it already this is a great time to see what museums are available through the Alameda County Library’s Discover & Go Museum Pass Program. All you need to do is be at least 15 years old and have a Library Card and you can request free (or discounted) museum passes. There are so many options it might be hard to make a decision. You can have up to 2 requests at a time. Take a look and you might discover something new!
If your museum of choice isn’t available through our Discover & Go program you can see a list of San Francisco Bay Area museums that offer free days here . There are many fantastic museums that offer a free day each month. These free days are generally at the beginning of the month, so your opportunity for August may have passed, but keep it in mind for the rest of the year. The museums are often very busy on those days, but well worth it!
If you like to fly kites and are interested in learning about how kites stay in the air, you should check out the Wind Fair. It’s happening this weekend on Sunday, August 12th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. This is a free program all about air and motion. It will be held outside the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
If you are an animal lover like me you might enjoy the Lake Merritt Squirrel Walk. This is a free educational program that takes you on a guided walk around Lake Merritt in Oakland while teaching you all about the local squirrels. Meet up at the entrance to Fairyland in Oakland tomorrow, August 11th at 12:00 pm.
Something that might be fun for grownups who are interested in architecture is the Art Deco walking tour in San Francisco. The next tour will be on Sunday, August 12th at 11:00 am. If you are interested in learning about Art Deco style buildings in the Marina District of San Francisco check out the details here.
One final suggestion for summer fun for free is to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. If you can find a place free of city lights you might get a chance to check out the meteor shower and all its incredible beauty this weekend. You can see the meteors after 10:00 or 11:00 pm. For more information from NASA take a look here.
These are just a few fun ideas for you and your family to take part in as the summer wraps up. I hope you have had a wonderful summer so far and get a last chance for some family fun time before the kids head back to school.
