Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run on this day, August 11th, in 1929. He was the first baseball player to do so. Since that day 24 other players have reached 500 homers too. See who else is in the 500 Home Run club here. Babe Ruth has long been regarded as one of baseball’s heroes. His career homerun record of 714 at his retirement in 1935 would stand for almost 40 years before being bested by Hank Aaron in 1974. If you are interested in Ruth’s baseball statistics look here. Check out what the library has to offer on Babe Ruth here. Be sure to watch the old footage of the Bambino in action below.

The 9-week “One World, Many Stories” summer reading game started on June 13 and will be coming to an end on August 13.  To celebrate this international theme, Centerville Library added a little taste of other cultures in many of our summer events.  At ventriloquist Tony Borders’ show, his cool and crazy critters from around the world brought kids a very fun time full of facts about animals from different continents.  Gary Lapow’s show made a houseful of kids laugh, dance, and sing ”All around the world” with sign language.  Magician Dan Chan stunned the audience with his amazing tricks and “Bian Lian” (face-changing), a Chinese national secret dramatic art.  The week after the second Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie came out, we held two Jeopardy games for kids to see how much they know about the world of wizards and witches. Then last week, 250 kids participated in the International Crafts and Games Day, and went home with hands full of world crafts and their names translated into other languages.  What a wonderful reading theme and cultural summer!  To see pictures or videos of Centerville Library’s summer events please visit our Facebook Page at http://www.facebook.com/CentervilleLibrary or click on the direct links below:

We will have  another summer program on August 4 featuring Thomas John, a very funny juggler.  It will be held outdoors in the library’s patio.  Don’t miss Centerville Library’s last show of the summer!

The very popular Kids Library Camp at Centerville Library was held on June 21 and 23.  As some kids said in their surveys: “This camp rocks!!!!”, “I liked the camp, it was fun!”, “Library camp was very fun!”, “I like this library a lot. It is the best library ever!”

During this 1-and-half-day fun-packed camp, kids learned about how their library works for them and where to find homework resources, discovered cool Internet websites and how to keep themselves safe, enjoyed very interesting booktalks, had a very tense and exciting Jeopardy game, and made creative paper-weaving crafts.

Watch more videos of our fun moments on Centerville Library’s Facebook or YouTube Channel.

If you just need to find something to do for a few

minutes, or you want to remember something from

a movie or song, a great place to go is Youtube.com .

It works like Google search to find songs from old

movies and the best part is you can then relive the

moment. I have several short clips of favorite scenes

from movies on my Iphone to watch when I want.  This is

a great way to enjoy the experience over and over.

A great app to access Youtube from your

smartphone is MXtube. It is super fast and easy

to use to download clips.

A few of my favorites clips right now are:

Bruno Mars – The Lazy Song [Official Alternate Version]

Lost in Space Forever

A Knight’s Tale Dance Scene

You can probably tell where my tastes, or lack of it

lies, but use it to find what you like and then enjoy

I’m a football fan.  Okay,  not a diehard fan and yes I usually wait until the playoffs to really catch-up to the good stuff, but I do like the game and I’ll watch college or professional football when I have a chance.  Recently with the passing of Ollie Matson, I was reminded of the number of great athletes who faced discrimination in their arena.  Some, like Matson, endured tremendous difficulties and still managed to make their mark and pave the way for others.

Ollie Matson, passed away yesterday.  He was a native of San Francisco and played with the USF Dons in 1951 when, although undefeated, were not invited to participate in a bowl game because two of their players, Mr. Matson and Burl Toler were black.  The team never considered accepting a bid without their full team and were known as the team that was “Undefeated, Untied and Uninvited”.  Eight members of that 1951 team went on to play in the NFL including Ollie Matson.  Mr. Matson also earned two medals in track at the 1952 Olympics and was one of the best all-around players in NFL history, and is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame.  You can learn more about the 1951 USF Dons and Ollie Matson in  Undefeated, Untied and Uninvited by Kristine Setting Clark and from the cstv clip by the same name as well as other clips.

Watch How Heartburn Works?

Seriously.  You read about it, hear about it, or experience it firsthand.  Now you can watch it on a VIDEO!

Anatomy books (in 611, 611.00222 and 612 areas) are very popular in the library.  Besides books, there are videos that may prove helpful with the study.  For example, we can learn by watching health videos on topics such as human anatomy and surgical procedures on MEDLINE Plus.  Click on the Videos & Cool Tools tab, then on the Anatomy Videos big button (in the middle) and take your pick!

And if you dare, check out the various Videos of Surgical Procedures.    And just in case you are curious about Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
