Looking for an exciting series of books to captivate a reluctant reader? This is not a new series, but it’s new to me. I started reading the Ranger’s Apprentice series (by John Flanagan) recently, and have quickly made it through seven of the eleven titles in the series. Most of the titles are under or around 300 pages (some of the later titles are longer).
I think the series would be especially entertaining for boys, but they are definitely fun for girls as well. The series centers around a young orphan, Will and his apprenticeship and subsequent friendship with the Ranger Halt. The early books focus on Will’s training with Halt and the dangers that accompany being a ranger. The books are full of adventure, sometimes mischief, friendships and most especially, action. The books are generally fast-paced reads, but they are wonderfully descriptive of the landscapes and time period, making you feel like you are a part of the story. I found myself drawn to the characters, and I truly enjoyed the battles as well as the friendships as they developed throughout the series. I’m looking forward to the last three books, and at the same time, wishing that the series wasn’t finished. This is series for action lovers, and for those who like stories similar to Robin Hood tales, without any magic thrown in.
