The California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program encourages reading of popular literature among the young people. Since 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the California Young Reader Medal.

Young readers recommend the titles of their favorite books for nomination, or teachers and librarians note repeatedly read or requested titles, and these titles are submitted to the California Young Reader Medal Committee. The committee read the suggested books, discuss their merits and appeal to children, and then decide upon a well-balanced list of nominees.  Then students from all over California are encouraged to read the nominees and vote for their favorite.

There are five categories: primary (Grades K-3), intermediate (Grades 3-6), middle school/junior high (Grades 6-9), young adult (Grades 9-12), and picture books for older readers (4th Grade and up).  If you are a young reader fall into any of these categories, you can vote your favorite nominees online or submit the ballot postmarked by April 1, 2017.  Winners will be announced on May 1, 2017.

check here and scroll down for the 2016 – 2017 nominees for each category.

Have fun reading and voting, and wait and see if your favorite title will be the next winner!
