Emergency Warming Center Still Needs Your Help!

The raining season is really upon us.  We have had many wet and windy days this winter already – and with many more to come.  The Warming Center is indeed need some help in order to accommodate the less fortune citizens who don’t have a place to go during this time.

If you would like to make a donation to the Emergency Warming Center, please kindly consider purchasing cots.  50 cots are needed. Coleman Pack-Away Cot can be purchased for $39.99 at Target Store or on Amazon.  You can bring them to the Warming Center at Fremont Senior Center, Wing A, 40086 Paseo Padre Parkway, Fremont, CA 94538, when the Center is open between 6 pm – 8 pm (please call Hotline # (510) 574-2222 to check);  or,  you can drop them off at the Human Services Department, 3300 Capitol Avenue, Bldg. B, Fremont CA 94538.

Human Services also has a donation page on the City of Fremont Web Site.  Human Services will send you thank-you letters with their Tax-Id number so contributions are tax deductible.

Emergency Warming Center Needs Your Help!

The Winter Emergency Warming Center will  be open every time it rains or drops below 40 degrees by the City of Fremont in collaboration with Compassion Network CitySERVE.

Volunteers and food donors are needed when it opens.  Please spread the words to anybody who might be interested in being a donor, volunteer; or be in need of this service.

Niles Festival of Lights and Parade

The Niles Festival of Lights and Parade which for many Fremont residents signals the start of the holiday season will take place from 6-9 pm on Friday, November 27 with the tree lighting at 6 pm at Niles Blvd.

Always the Friday after Thanksgiving, the “Train Of Lights” also lights up the Niles night – a decorated 14-car steam train, glowing in the dark, and rolling away with 500 passengers on a ride through Niles Canyon – a sight must see.

Stores and restaurants in the area will be open for business, and there will be a lot of dressed up characters and fun things to do for children.

 

Come join people line Niles Blvd, live sound/DJ Service, floats, Mexican horses, Santa, giant balloons, old cars, sleds, antique tractors, fire engines, bikers, the Tap Dancing Christmas Trees, Snoopy and even 20 members of the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers (Star Wars). Come early, carpool or take public transportation to avoid parking challenge.

Rewired To Inspire

This is a pretty new program involved students 7-18 years old and adults aged 55 and up. The fun and successful kick-off event took place on May 20th.  After several months off, they are coming back to resume the program on September 16th, with a plan to have it regularly on every 3rd Friday of the month.

Sponsored by FUSS (Fremont Unified Student Store), this student initiated Care Project helps build a bridge between older adults and students.  Through this program, adults can act as role models by sharing their cultural heritage and wisdom while students can increase their communication and leadership skills as well as enhance their emotional intelligence (EQ).

Summer Reading Game – One More Week

If you haven’t signed up for this year’s summer reading game – Read For the Win, you’d better hurry.

This Saturday, 8/13, will be the last day to sign up to play.  Once you’ve signed up, you can continue to read and play until 8/31.  This year, other than the paper bingo game, we also have an online game, which means you can win double the prizes.

Friends of the Library Book Sale This Weekend

Where (not at the Fremont Main Library):

Old Main Library/Teen Center, 39770 Paseo Padre Parkway (take Sailway Drive to Central Park)

 

Fremont Friends of the Library members get to preview 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 8. Membership, available at the door, is $10 per address and runs January to December.

 

Book sale hours are:

Saturday, July 9, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Sunday, July 10, 12 noon to 3 p.m.

 

Books are $1 per inch stacked, while records and maps are 25 cents each.

Children’s books, SPECIAL books, sheet music, CDs, DVD and jigsaw puzzles are individually priced.

Specially featured are books on American railroads, both old and modern trains.

On Sunday only, $5 per paper grocery bag. Bring your own bags, and no boxes!

 

Book sale items are donated from the libraries and private individuals. All proceeds are given to the Fremont library system to purchase equipment, books, children’s programs, etc.

Summer Reading Game 2016 – Read For the Win!

The ever very popular Summer Reading Game officially starts today, Monday, June 13 and will run through Saturday, August 13.  Other than a bingo game to play on the game board, this year we have an online game for you as well.  Everybody from the newborn to centenarians can play.

For the bingo game, you can sign up at your library any time during open hours starting June 13 and choose one game board depending upon your age.
