This year the last chance to meet with a volunteer lawyer at Fremont Main will be on Law-logo[1]Tuesday, November 26. The Lawyer in the Library program resumes on January 28, 2014, the fourth Tuesday of that month. During the break, appointments with volunteer lawyers may still be available in other libraries. Since registration methods vary, be sure to contact the host library beforehand and find out how to register. At Fremont Main, those seeking a 15-minute consultation with a lawyer need to register in person at the Information Desk between 5 and 5:45 p.m. on the day of the program. A lottery at 5:50 p.m. assigns the time of the appointment. The phone number for the Info Desk is (510) 745-1401.

Take a peek at the library’s online Legal Information Resource Center to prepare for a meeting with any lawyer.

After taking a break in December, the Lawyer in the Library program at Fremont MainLaw-logo[1] resumes this month.  On the fourth Tuesday each month, from January through November, those who wish to speak with an attorney can submit their names in person from 5 to 5:45 p.m. at the Information Desk.  At 5:50 p.m. names will be drawn to assign 15-minute free on-site consultations with a member of the Alameda County Bar Association who will help define the problem and make referrals when needed.  Persons seeking an appointment must be present at the time of the lottery.  Occasionally more people sign up than can be accommodated, so a visit with a lawyer is not guaranteed.  The 15-minute consultations start at 6 p.m., with the last one at 7:45 p.m.

The 2013 Lawyer in the Library schedule at Fremont Main is shown below.  Information on other Lawyer in the Library programs can be found here.  Be sure to call the host library to inquire about its registration procedure, which varies from location to location.  For more information, contact the Fremont Main Library Information Desk at (510) 745-1401.

The Lawyer in the Library program of the Alameda County Bar Association comes to the Fremont Main Library from 6 to 8 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except December. This month, it will be on March 22. Patrons who wish to avail themselves of this service need to submit their names between 5 and 5:45 p.m. at the Information Desk. Names are drawn at 5:50 p.m., and each person must be present when his or her name is called in order to be assigned a 15-minute appointment with a lawyer. Sometimes more patrons sign up than can be accommodated. Other libraries host this program and it pays to contact the participating library in advance to confirm the date and time and to inquire about the sign-up procedure, which varies. The Information Desk at Fremont Main can be reached at tel. (510) 745-1401.

Besides the Lawyer in the Library program, legal information is available at the Alameda County Library website, under the Research tab. Forms and information in a number of languages are available at the Self-help Center, which also offers the option to Ask a Law Librarian. (Librarians may point to sources of information but cannot provide legal advice or interpretations of the law.) These online resources are worth noting since the popular NOLO and other law guides seldom stay on library shelves. The Fremont Main Library’s legal reference section, a mere fraction of the collections in the Alameda County Law Library in Oakland and Hayward, has select publications for use only within the library. Dan Hess of the Albany Library recently took pictures of Fremont Main’s legal reference shelves and created the following image.
