websterIt wasn’t the first dictionary, but on April 14th , 1828, Noah Webster published An American Dictionary of the English Language .It became very popular here and Britian and it became the source for spelling and pronunciation. 

How did I learn this ?  It turns out that the Grolier Multimedia encylopedia on this page of the library website, has a link to this day in history. You’ll never know what fun stuff there is if you don’t explore the library Research guide .
