If you like working with children, enjoy reading, and want to make a difference to the community, we have an excellent opportunity for you!

Every Tuesday and Thursday from October through May, more than 50 children are meeting with their teen volunteers at Centerivlle Library to improve reading.  This highly appreciated popular program has helped hundreds of kids in the past 5 years.  It is a very rewarding volunteer opportunity many teens are looking for.  Applications are now open, for details and to apply, please download the application form and turn it in to the library as soon as possible.  Positions are open until filled.

Do you enjoy playing with babies?  Do you want to  introduce them to the library world by having fun together singing, reading and do some body movement? 

We are recruiting more volunteers to expand our very popular storytimes for the very young.  If you are interested in learning how to lead storytimes for babies and their mothers, please contact the Children’s Desk at (510)745-1421 during the library open hours or you can send an email to jtsou@aclibrary.org.  These storytime for babies will be running once a week for about 40 minutes each time in every other month.

The upcoming training sessions are scheduled  on two consecutive Tuesdays, 8/16 and 8/23, 2 – 4 p.m.

Come and give it a try.  Believe me, it’s rewarding to see the smiles on the babies’ faces.

Volunteer Opportunity: Connect @ the Library co-instructor

Work Location: Fremont Main Library
Dates: Various Saturdays, 2:00pm-3:30pm, April – November
Training: 4 hours required training prior to co-teaching a class
Time Commitment: 6 month commitment
Age: 18+

Position Description:
The Connect @ the Library co-instructor is responsible for helping to teach basic computer instruction classes to adult library users. Co-instructors will work jointly with a librarian in teaching hands-on computer instruction classes to groups of up to 12 adults. Classes are taught using existing curriculum, but volunteers may also be asked to help revise curriculum to better meet the needs of the adult students. Co-instructors will be responsible for helping to teach up to 4 introductory classes. Computer classes for 2009 include: Introduction to Computers, Introduction to the Internet, Creating and using an Email Account, Intro to Microsoft Word 2007, Intro to Excel 2007, and Intro to PowerPoint 2007.

Skills:
Basic understanding of computers and the Windows environment and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications. Ability to work as a member of a team and to follow instructions. Ability to communicate instructional concepts in an easy to understand manner. Must enjoy working with the public and with adults of all ages and skill levels. Patience and a sense of humor are required.
